Michal Menert of Pretty Lights Music with Mikey Thunder
Michal Menert of Pretty Lights Music with Mikey Thunder
Colorado based Michal Menert was born in then Communist Kielce, Poland. During his childhood, Michal's father exposed him to a wide variety of Eastern and Western music, giving his son fertile soil in which to plant his musical visions early on. Coming from a musical background of playing guitar, keyboards, and dabbling in a variety of other instruments gave Michal Menert a unique approach to composing his own musical style.

He grew up in Colorado with Derek Vincent Smith of Pretty Lights and together they played in several bands and challenged and inspired each other as they developed their own unique production styles. He co-produced the debut Pretty Lights album, Taking Up Your Precious Time, and has collaborated with Derek Vincent Smith a handful of tracks since then. He also performs with Paul Basic under the name Half Color.

Michal Menert was the first artist signed to the record label Pretty Lights Music, with the release of his album Dreaming of a Bigger Life in the Spring of 2010. His sound combines obscure vintage samples from both Eastern European and Western vinyl with rich analog synthesis and organic hard hitting beats. It is a fusion of yesterday's elements and tomorrow's ideas. Michal's second album, the mega-LP Even If It Isn't Right was released on April 24, 2012. This self-called mega album features 27 heart-clenching tracks with nearly two hours of uncompromising music. A non-linear, yet robust, description of what surrounds Menert and how those influences have shuttled him along life’s journey, Even If It Isn’t Right takes the listener through a collage of emotions.

Thunder spins a genre blending, bassdriven-partyrock-electrocrunk-futurefunk. With 16 years in the game, he's mastered the art of improvisation with an uncanny ability to work with and rework the vibe of the party with precision. Mikey learned his chops in the diverse music scene of Burlington Vermont where he gained a love and appreciation for all types of music and immersed himself into DJ culture.

In the fall of 1999, Mikey relocated to the mountains of Jackson Hole where he was soon kidnapped by Michael Franti and Spearhead for the Stay Human Tour. After opening for Spearhead in Jackson Hole, Thunder was handpicked by Michael Franti to open the rest of the tour where he mixed beats into their sets, during set break, and scratched with their beatboxer, Radioactive.

After the Spearhead tour Mikey relocated to Boulder Colorado and continued to pursue his musical career. He has shared stages with some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, Jam, and Electronic music including Jurassic 5, Method Man, Redman, Z-Trip, Bassnectar, Glitch Mob, Savoy, Particle, Boombox, Disco Biscuits, and the String Cheese Incident. At that time Thunder also was an Atari playing stuntman DJ in the band Sonar. The band shared the stage with the Wailers at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and played Hightimes Magazine’s SXSW party, and the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.

In the fall of 2009 Mikey joined the Pretty Lights team, opened for over 30 shows on their tours and performed cuts on the Making Up a Changing Mind EP, released in 2010. Thunder is currently Pretty Lights Music's DJ.
